Condition
Teeth Grinding & Jaw Clenching
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching, medically known as bruxism, often occur unconsciously during sleep or high-stress periods. Over time, hyperactive masseter muscles can cause facial soreness, morning tension headaches, tooth wear, and widening of the lower face.
What is Teeth Grinding & Jaw Clenching?
Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, driven by hypertonicity in the powerful masseter and temporalis muscles of the jaw. When these muscles are repeatedly overworked, they can undergo muscular hypertrophy (becoming bulkier and widening the jawline), trigger temporomandibular joint (TMJ) strain, and refer pain into the temples, neck, and ears.
Common signs and concerns
- Waking with tight, aching jaw muscles, temple pressure or morning headaches
- Flattened, chipped, cracked or worn tooth surfaces noted by your dentist
- Clicking, popping or stiffness in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
- Widening, squareness or increased fullness along the lower angle of the jaw
- Unconscious daytime clenching when concentrating, driving or feeling stressed
- Aching or fatigue in the jaw while chewing tough foods
Possible contributing factors
- Psychological stress, anxiety, and high-pressure work or life environments
- Sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnoea and micro-arousals
- Dental malocclusion or changes in dental bite alignment
- Excess caffeine, alcohol, or stimulant consumption
- Certain medications, particularly SSRI antidepressants
- Family history and genetic tendency toward jaw clenching
When to seek professional assessment
Arrange an assessment if you experience persistent jaw pain, limitation in opening your mouth, frequent morning headaches, or progressive dental damage. Any sudden inability to open or close the jaw (jaw lock) requires prompt dental or maxillofacial evaluation.
How Dr Farzana assesses this concern
Assessment is anatomical rather than product-led. Dr Farzana looks at facial proportion, skin quality, volume distribution and movement, then discusses what is contributing to the appearance you have noticed. Options are explained with their limits, alternatives and recovery, and nothing is treated on the day unless you are comfortable and suitable.
Treatments that may be considered
These are options offered by Dr Farzana that may be discussed for this concern. Which, if any, is appropriate for you is decided only after a private medical assessment.
Suitability and important information
This page is general information only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Suitability for any treatment is confirmed at a private medical consultation, including a review of your history, medication and goals. Risks, alternatives, aftercare and realistic outcomes are discussed openly. Results vary between individuals and no treatment is suitable for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
What is bruxism?+
Bruxism is the medical term for involuntary teeth grinding or jaw clenching, commonly occurring during sleep or times of high concentration and stress.
How does Masseter Botox help teeth grinding?+
Botulinum toxin temporarily relaxes the overactive masseter muscles without interfering with normal chewing or speech. By reducing the maximum clenching force, it relieves jaw tension, morning headaches, and prevents further tooth wear.
Will Masseter Botox slim my face?+
When masseter muscles are consistently overworked, they enlarge (hypertrophy). Relaxing them allows the muscle bulk to reduce gradually over 6 to 8 weeks, creating a softer, more tapered jawline as a secondary cosmetic benefit.
How long do the effects last?+
Symptom relief typically begins within 1 to 2 weeks, with peak relaxation and contour softening at 4 to 8 weeks. Results generally last between 4 to 6 months before muscle activity gradually returns.
Is Masseter Botox painful?+
Discomfort is minimal. Injections are performed with micro-fine needles into specific anatomical landmarks, taking only a few minutes with no downtime required.
