Cellulite & Skin Laxity

Cellulite is normal and extremely common in women, and it is not a disease. Where patients ask for help, the aim is a realistic improvement in skin quality and dimpling, not a promise of smooth skin.

What is Cellulite & Skin Laxity?

Cellulite occurs where fibrous bands tether the skin to deeper tissue while fat pushes upward between them, producing a dimpled surface. Skin laxity is separate: it reflects reduced collagen and elastin, so the skin no longer retracts as well, often after pregnancy, weight change or with age.

Common signs and concerns

  • Dimpling on the thighs, buttocks or upper arms
  • Skin that looks smoother lying down than standing
  • Loose or crepey skin after weight loss or pregnancy
  • Loss of firmness when the skin is pinched
  • Uneven texture visible in bright or directional light

Possible contributing factors

  • Female tissue architecture and hormonal influence
  • Genetics and family pattern
  • Weight gain, weight loss and repeated fluctuation
  • Pregnancy
  • Reduced activity and prolonged sitting
  • Age-related collagen and elastin loss
  • Smoking

When to seek professional assessment

Cellulite needs no medical treatment. Seek a medical opinion if there is pain, swelling of one limb, skin hardening, warmth or colour change, as these are not cellulite and require assessment.

How Dr Farzana assesses this concern

Dr Farzana begins with a private medical consultation: your history, skin type, previous treatments, medication and daily routine are reviewed before the area is examined in good light. Where relevant she will discuss photography for your own records, explain which changes are realistically treatable and which are not, and set out a staged plan with review points.

Treatments that may be considered

These are options offered by Dr Farzana that may be discussed for this concern. Which, if any, is appropriate for you is decided only after a private medical assessment.

Suitability and important information

This page is general information only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Suitability for any treatment is confirmed at a private medical consultation, including a review of your history, medication and goals. Risks, alternatives, aftercare and realistic outcomes are discussed openly. Results vary between individuals and no treatment is suitable for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

What is cellulite?+

Cellulite occurs where fibrous bands tether the skin to deeper tissue while fat pushes upward between them, producing a dimpled surface. It is normal, extremely common in women and is not a disease.

How is skin laxity different?+

Laxity reflects reduced collagen and elastin, so the skin no longer retracts as well. It commonly follows pregnancy, weight change or ageing and is assessed separately from dimpling.

Can cellulite be permanently removed?+

Realistic improvement in texture and skin quality is what treatment sets out to achieve, and results are maintained rather than permanent. Dr Farzana will not promise smooth skin, and she will tell you if she thinks treatment would add little for you.

Is this a weight-loss treatment?+

These are skin-quality treatments, and they work alongside rather than instead of nutrition, activity or medical weight management. Combining them usually gives the most satisfying result.

How many sessions might be needed?+

Body areas are normally treated as a course with review points, and the number depends on the area, its severity and how your skin responds. This is agreed at consultation.

Does exercise or losing weight help?+

Activity and a stable weight support skin quality and can reduce the appearance of dimpling, although cellulite occurs in slim and active women too. Repeated weight fluctuation tends to make laxity more noticeable.

When should a leg change be seen by a doctor?+

Pain, swelling of one limb, skin hardening, warmth or colour change are not cellulite and need medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment.
